TikToker’s travel ‘hack’ gets him banned from Spirit Airlines

Travel hacks, dishwashing hacks, skincare hacks — TikTokers are flooding the platform with various shortcuts and tips that they claim make everyone’s lives easier.

That was the idea behind Rob K’s upload from September, which did not go according to plan.

Rob filmed himself sitting at a terminal for a Spirit Airlines flight and wrote in the video that this was his “carry on hack.”

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of flying the ultra-low-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines, you’ll know that the company only allows passengers one “personal item” for free, adding are extra charges for carry-on bags and checked luggage.

In the TikTok, Rob has his boarding pass pulled up on his phone and is visibly changing the number next to “carry-on bag” from “0” to “1.” With self check-in or online check-in, it is very possible to lie about not having a carry-on bag when you do, but you can’t hide it by the time you get to the gate.

It’s not so much a “hack” as it is a scam. Even though Rob captioned the TikTok with “Didn’t actually do this,” Spirit Airlines still found out about the video — maybe because it had almost 3 million views — and sent him a letter formally banning him from flying with on its planes for the next two years.

Rob still seemed in good spirits after receiving the letter denouncing him for his “egregious misconduct.” TikTok users, however, thought it was hilarious.

“The crew will tell you that you gotta fly the plane as compensation,” one person joked.

“You need to change [boarding] zone too — I’ve done this,” another added.

“Delete this now!! They’re gonna know!!!” someone else commented.

Others pointed out that the attendants scan the QR code, which would show conflicting information on their computer screens, so the “hack” definitely doesn’t work — even if you want to risk a two-year ban from Spirit.
