Towards the end of 2022, Rodger Cleye (@Rodgercleye) became a viral sensation on TikTok by posting videos of him singing popular songs. Fans took to his authentic and relatable videos and began making edits with his covers, with some of the edits surpassing the popularity of the original video.
Cleye’s videos are short. He usually just sings the chorus of the songs he’s requested to do. Yet, TikTokers use the green screen feature to place cutouts of Cleye singing and put him over rooms that fit the mood.
Although it’s been several months since Cleye became a major figure on TikTok, users and fans continue to use him in edits. Currently, the hashtag #rodgercleyeedit has over 486 million views.
The viral star has done covers of SZA’s “Low,” Shakira’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” and Taylor Swift’s “…Ready For It?”
Cleye recently re-entered the limelight due to a video of him singing “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. The song was released on Jan. 13 and is the lead single from Cyrus’ upcoming album, Endless Summer Vacation.
His video garnered over 3.7 million views and over 512,000 likes.
In the song’s chorus, Cyrus sings “I can buy myself flowers/write my name in the sand.” The breakup-focused lyrics strike a chord with listeners, as the song is the most-streamed song in a single week in Spotify’s history. TikTokers with bleak outlooks on this upcoming Valentine’s Day have used Cleye’s version of the song to joke their way through the pain.
There’s still a month until Valentine’s Day, but with “Flowers” headed for the top of the charts and Cleye continuing to put out covers, TikTokers have plenty of time to meme their way out of their feelings.
