Frank Lampard remains convinced that Timo Werner will rediscover his scoring form for Chelsea, despite the German’s barren run in front of goal.
The summer signing has gone 10 Premier League games without a goal, and his only strike in any competition since early November came in the FA Cup thrashing of League Two Morecambe.
Werner was left out of the starting line-up for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Fulham, but came off the bench to waste a glorious opportunity to seal the result late on. However, Lampard insisted he was encouraged by the cameo.
“I was happy with him when he came on,” the Blues boss said. “When he gets into those positions, particularly with the [chance] that went wide, where he’s in that in-between position because that’s where I’ve seen him score a lot of goals in his career so far. And he will score them.”
The barren spell is unfamiliar territory for Werner, who scored 34 times in 45 games for RB Leipzig last season - and Lampard admits the 24-year-old is beating himself up over the drop off in form.
“He may be being hard on himself,” Lampard added. “I think any striker worth their salt who has scored the number of goals he has in the last few years in Germany will be hard on themselves. That’s how you get to the top, you have a desire to score goals.
“Timo will get there, there’s no problem: he can be hard on himself, he has my support.”
Lampard finished his career as Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals to his name, and hopes his experience can help Werner out of his rut.
“I wouldn’t say I try and show him how it’s done, I just try and coach him like I coach all the others,” Lampard said. “But I do take a vested interest.
“I thought like a striker as a midfielder player, I wanted to get into areas. I was very on top of myself through the week, considering that how I train and how many times I hit different shots from different areas will replicate itself in a game. If I can put a bit of that into the players and into Timo then hopefully I’m doing my job.”
