Tokyo Marathon to have field of 25,000 runners
The 2021 Tokyo Marathon, due to take place on March 7, is now set for October 17
Organisers are hoping to host a field of 25,000 runners, down from the pre-pandemic capacity of 38,000.
The organisers of this year's Tokyo Marathon, which is set to take place on October 17, will have a mass-participation field of 25,000, unlike last year's event, which was restricted to elites.
Japan Running News reported that roughly 7,000 runners from the 2020 race deferred their entry to this year’s event, meaning around 18,000 spots are up for grabs. Before the pandemic, as many as 38,ooo runners took part. International entries are to be accepted for this year's race, with race entry opening on Monday, March 22, and closing on Wednesday, March 31.
In a press release for the event, the Tokyo Marathon organisers also announced that, for the first time, there will be a virtual event, allowing runners around the world to complete the race using a running app. The organisers also made it clear that the actual race was not a certainty, as the Covid-19 situation could change.
At the moment, all of the 2021 World Marathon Majors will be taking place in the autumn. The list includes London, Boston, Berlin and New York.
