The PGA Tour record for the most players in a sudden-death playoff is six.

On Sunday at the Olympic men’s golf competition, we were witness to an insane seven-way playoff, and it wasn’t even to win the tournament.

After American Xander Schauffele took home the gold medal with a final round 67, and Slovakian Rory Sabbatini the silver, the battle was on for Olympic bronze.

Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Paul Casey, Mito Pereira, C.T. Pan and Sebastian Munoz — seven men from seven different countries — all tied at 15-under after 72 holes.

The tee box at the first playoff hole may have been a little bit crowded, but the stage was set for a drama-filled finish.

It's safe to say golf fans were fired up.

With seven golfers all battling for one spot, it was safely assumed it was probably going to take more than one hole.

It ended up taking four.

And on the fourth, Pan defeated Morikawa and won the first-ever Olympic golf medal for Chinese Taipei.

It might very well be the only time in the history of this sport that we see a seven-way playoff for third place, but that is part of what makes Olympic golf so special.

McIlroy, who was eliminated on the third playoff hole, admitted that though the circumstances were unique, his emotions out on the course were at an all-time high.

So are we, Rory. So are we.
