The reviews are in for the new Tom & Jerry movie – and it safe to say it hasn't gone down all that well.

The live-action big screen reboot of the classic cartoon series follows the animated mischievous mouse Jerry as he moves into New York's finest hotel on the eve of "wedding of the century", forcing Kayla (Chloë Grace Moretz) to hire Tom to get rid of him.

However, going by what critics are saying, it's probably best to stick to the original TV series, with the movie being labelled everything from "unimaginative" to a "catastrophe"... though some reviews were a bit less harsh.

Here's what the reviewers have said:

The Hollywood Reporter

"A tired exploitation of intellectual property that became passé the night The Simpsons aired its first Itchy & Scratchy Show (if not decades earlier), Tim Story's Tom & Jerry is five to ten minutes of action that might have worked in one of the cartoon duo's shorts, surrounded by an inordinate amount of unimaginative, unfunny human-based conflict."

The Wrap

"As Tom & Jerry makes its HBO Max debut, the streaming service currently offers more than 70 of the characters' classic, vintage animated shorts, loaded with cat-and-mouse hilarity. Any random dozen of them would be time better spent for viewers of all ages than 100 minutes of this 21st-century catastrophe."

Variety

"No, Tom & Jerry won't be winning any Oscars, even if Hanna-Barbera shorts in which they starred racked up seven during the series' 1940-58 run. But it's good enough to go down easy."

IGN

"Tom & Jerry is a sufficient family offering with a cool cast, a sparkling soundtrack, and occasional fun. It's too bad that Tom and Jerry often feel like afterthoughts in their own film and that there wasn't much more for them to do other than serve the story of others."

Tom & Jerry is out now in US cinemas and available to watch now on HBO Max in the US. A UK release date is to be confirmed.
