The Tony Awards return after longest Broadway shutdown in history

The Tony Awards returned on Sunday night after a two-year hiatus.

The 74th annual Tony Awards were held at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York on Sunday. Broadway's biggest night handed out awards for performances occurring between 26 April 2019 and 19 February 2020, as theatres were forced to close due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The awards show took place in two parts. The beginning, hosted by Audra McDonald, premiered exclusively on Paramount+ and included most of the show's top prizes. In the second stretch, Leslie Odom Jr. took over the host stand to present The Tony Awards Present: Broadway's Back! which showcased musical performances by the nominees for Best Musical and from two shows receiving special Tonys; Freestyle Love Supreme and American Utopia.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the stage adaptation of the Baz Luhrmann movie, and the Broadway transfer of Matthew Lopez's two-part play The Inheritance, which examines love between gay men in contemporary New York a generation after the AIDS crisis, won the show's top awards of Best Musical and Best Play, respectively.
