The Dallas Cowboys announced on Saturday that Tony Romo broke a bone in his back when he was tackled from behind in the team's preseason game on Thursday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said (vis ESPN) the team is not ruling out Romo for the season opener in two weeks. However, others are reporting that Romo will miss a significant chunk of the regular season.

A source for Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk says Romo is "expected" to miss six to 10 weeks, which would include the first four to eight weeks of the regular season.

Ian Raport of the NFL Network reports that the "best-case scenario" is Romo will be back "by mid-season."

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that he was told Romo will be out "beyond" Week 1.

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that no surgery is needed on the injury.

The Cowboys have a bye in Week 7 this season.

The injury came on the third snap of the game against the Seahawks. Romo was hit from behind and immediately grabbed his back before being taken out of the game.

Romo lobbied to be put back in the game but the Cowboys decided against it.

Later in the game, when asked about the status of Romo, owner Jerry Jones said Romo "is not injured."

It would seem now that rookie Dak Prescott will become the Cowboys' starting quarterback. The fourth-round pick has impressed in the preseason and is already being labeled as the Cowboys' quarterback of the future.

It would seem that future is going to show up a lot sooner than expected.
