Tony Romo will not call Cardinals-Rams game in Week 17 due to COVID-19 protocol

CBS will be without its No. 1 NFL color analyst in Week 17. Tony Romo will not be on the call when the Arizona Cardinals take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday due to COVID-19 protocol.

The network announced the news Saturday. Boomer Esiason will fill in for Romo, while both Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson will remain on the broadcast.

CBS did not specify whether Romo tested positive for COVID-19 or if he came into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.

Al Michaels also missed a game due to COVID-19 protocol

Romo won’t be the first big name announcer to be pulled off a game due to COVID-19 protocol. NBC pulled Al Michaels off its “Sunday Night Football” broadcast in Week 15 due to “NBCUniversal COVID-19 safety protocols.”

Michaels said he had no symptoms and looked forward to returning to the booth soon. Michaels was able to return to call the Green Bay Packers-Tennessee Titans game in Week 16.

It’s unclear when Romo will be able to return to CBS’ booth.
