If you've bought a used car in the second quarter of 2021 the odds are that it is a black Ford Fiesta.

No, that's not a mind reading trick — data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) released this morning showed that sales of used Ford Fiestas outstripped any other car, coming in at 94,206 sales.

The second most popular second hand vehicle was a Vauxhall Corsa, which sold 73,366 units, the SMMT said.

Third on the list was the Ford Focus, which sold 72,105, followed by the Volkswagen Golf (69,582 units), and Vauxhall Astra (56,189 units).

The data showed that of the 2,167,504 vehicles that changed hands in the second quarter, 461,050 were black. The second most popular colour was silver, followed by blue, grey, white, red and green, in that order.

According to the SMMT, UK used car transactions rose 108.6%, following a weak second quarter in 2020, to 2,167,504 units.

The increase tracks the country’s gradual emergence from lockdown — as businesses reopened, demand for personal mobility increased.

Compared to the near standstill of the economy last year, the used car market saw the biggest growth in April, up 307.4% on 2020 with 724,743 transactions in the month, and up 5.0% on pre-pandemic 2019.

All months in Q2 saw significant growth, with May and June up 9.9% and 4.6% on 2019 respectively, the best performance for both months on record.
