Top Gear's Freddie Flintoff has admitted to the "hardest time" following the on-set car crash that left him hospitalised.

Back in December, the former cricketer was involved in a car crash and taken to the hospital while filming the latest series of the BBC show. Following the crash, which took place at Dunsford Park Aerodrome, the BBC announced that filming for the 34th series of the hit show had been cancelled.

In a video shared by the England Cricket team's Instagram on Wednesday (October 4), Flintoff was seen speaking publicly for the first time since the accident.

During a speech in which he presented an England cap to cricketer Tom Hartley ahead of his debut, Flintoff referenced the support he had received during the "hardest time".

"When you get this cap, this changes your life. It's one of those things. It's before and after it," Flintoff said to Hartley in the speech.

"This enables you to walk tall and move faster. Play with passion, play with pride, play with belief. And also [be] part of a family of people.

"They'll share the good times with you, the successes. But as I found over the past few months, they'll be there in the hardest times of your life, they will stand next to you," he added, alluding to his recovery.

Just last month, Flintoff made his first public appearance since the accident, appearing at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff where he was seen leading the England's men's cricket team in a series of fielding drills.

Following the news that the BBC had cancelled series 34 of Top Gear, the BBC said: "We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery. We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we'll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year."

The BBC have since responded to reports that the show is being axed altogether, telling Digital Spy: "A decision on the timing of future Top Gear shows will be made in due course with BBC Content."

Top Gear episodes can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
