Tottenham player ratings vs Wolfsberger: Dele Alli provides reminder of his quality as Bale upturn continues

Tottenham eased into the Europa League last-16 with a 4-0 (agg 8-1) thrashing of Wolfsberger.

The tie felt like something of a foregone conclusion after Spurs’ 4-1 win in the first leg last week but the match was significant for the contribution of Dele Alli, who opened the scoring with a brilliant bicycle kick and finished with two assists.

Gareth Bale also continued his upturn with a goal from the bench, while Carlos Vinicius scored twice in a second half which included debuts for youngsters Marcel Lavinier and Nile John.

Dan Kilpatrick was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to run the rule over the home players...

Joe Hart 7

As vocal as always, barking orders at his back four. Didn’t have a serious save to make.

Matt Doherty 7

Hesitant and sloppy when he got in good positions but got the assist for Dele’s super strike with a one-two, which should boost his confidence.

Toby Alderweireld 7

Little to do but solid when called upon. Booked for dissent with Spurs cruising at 3-0.

Eric Dier 6

Very lucky to escape being penalised after bringing down Cheikhou Dieng as the last man moments before Vinicius’ first goal. A bit rash at times.

Ben Davies 7

Solid on his 50th European appearance for the club and got forward well. Involved in the moves for two of the second-half goals.

Harry Winks 8

Took a while to get up to speed in the first half but grew into the game and covered plenty of ground. Won possession in the build-up to Bale’s goal. Shooting was wayward.

Moussa Sissoko 6

Kept it simple and did his job in in the midfield. Nearly bulldozed his way to goal before being replaced late on.

Steven Bergwijn 7

Looked desperate for goal, occasionally to the detriment of the team. Did test the goalkeeper in the first half but too often lost possession.

Dele Alli 9

His stunning overhead kick was a reminder of his quality and also finished with assists for Vinicius and Bale. Decisive. A possible turning point?

Erik Lamela 7

Loves running the show against lesser opponents and looked on it. Unlucky not to score from a succession of shots and should have had an assist when Vinicius’ effort was cleared off the line.

Carlos Vinicius 8

He’s no Harry Kane, obviously, but has a canny knack for getting goals in this competition. Should have scored after rounding the goalkeeper in the first half but made amends with a back-post header to double Spurs’ lead and a fine curling finish.

Substitutes

Gareth Bale (Lamela 68’) 8

Continued his upturn with a superb goal just five minutes after coming on, caressing Dele’s pass into the top corner. Surely a certain starter against Burnley here on Sunday.

Lucas Moura (Bergwijn 68’) 7

Ran around a lot.

Marcel Lavinier (Doherty 74’) 6

The 20-year-old former Chelsea academy player looked a little nervous on his debut.

Nile John (Sissoko 80’) 6

17-year-old made his debut in the heart of midfield and had a couple of nice touches.

Dane Scarlett (Dele 80’) 8

Took his chance by bagging an assist by nicking the ball from a defender for Vinicius’ second goal and forced a save from the goalkeeper.

Subs not used: Lloris, Tanganga, Reguilon, Markanday, Ndombele, Kane, Son.
