Tottenham trio Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Giovani Lo Celso to train ahead of Chelsea clash

Nuno Espirito Santo says Davinson Sanchez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso will train with the Tottenham squad on Saturday and will be assessed before a decision is made on their involvement against Chelsea.

The South American trio have been training in Croatia for the past ten days to avoid spending the same period in a UK quarantine hotel.

They missed last weekend’s dismal defeat to Crystal Palace and the Europa Conference League draw at Rennes on Thursday, but will arrive back in the UK on Saturday morning.

Nuno is facing a mounting selection headache for the visit of rivals Chelsea on Sunday, with Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura forced off in the 2-2 draw in France and Heung-min Son (calf) and Eric Dier (thigh) unlikely to be fit. Japhet Tanganga is suspended on Sunday and Ryan Sessegnon also expected to miss out with a hamstring problem.

Nuno says centre-backs Sanchez and Romero and midfielder Lo Celso must be assessed but, in a welcome boost, opened the door to them featuring against Chelsea.

“They arrive Saturday and they will have a training session in the afternoon,” Nuno said. “[We have to see] if they are available and fit. They are working hard in Croatia with the sports science [staff member], it’s not the same but due to circumstances we have to assess them properly.

“If we consider they will be options then we must consider them in this moment.

“Of course we anticipate they will be able to join all the group together in the afternoon.

“We must understand what happened [with them] due to restrictions but for us as a group it’s been hard,” Nuno added. “It’s been hard because absences are always a problem. It requires adaptation but hopefully they return Saturday and we can look forward normally.”

Tanguy Ndombele could make his first League appearance under Nuno on Sunday after coming through 79 minutes on his return to the side against Rennes.

Ndombele had a hand in both of Spurs’s goals but Nuno said patience was required with the maverick midfielder.

“It was his first game Tanguy was involved in since the beginning of the season,” the head coach said. “We had all the pre-season and we are already playing Premier League and European competition and it was Tanguy’s first game, so let’s be patient.”
