Tottenham’s relationship with new official paint supplier Dulux is already wearing thin after the company was forced to gloss over a number of Twitter posts mocking the club on Thursday.

Shortly after announcing their "perfect match" with Spurs, Dulux's official account tweeted a series of uncomfortable jokes, which must have turned the air blue in the club's boardroom.

The now-deleted tweets mocked Tottenham's trophy record and defensive struggles this season.

Replying to the announcement, one supporter asked if the tins of paint could be stored in the club's trophy room, prompting Dulux to reply with a photo of an empty cabinet, embossed with the Tottenham emblem, and accompanied by the caption "unused trophy cabinet".

In a separate tweet, Dulux also warned that “surfaces should be dust free before painting”.

Another fan asked if the Dulux dog – who was pictured bounding happily around Spurs's stadium as part of the launch – could play at centre-half, with the company's account suggesting he "might do a better job" than Spurs's defenders.

Manager Jose Mourinho will no doubt be quick to brush off Dulux's gaffes if asked about them at his pre-Everton press conference on Thursday afternoon, with the manager currently facing bigger problems as some supporters claim his football is like watching paint dry.

The start to the partnership has no doubt taken the shine off the fledging relationship, however.

The new partnership reflects Tottenham's broadening commercial outlook, with lucrative deals already in place for an official mattress supplier, an official tyre partner, an official car partner and an official gaming partner.
