Nuno Espirito Santo’s decision to rest his stars for the midweek game against Vitesse Arnhem backfired, as Tottenham’s second string went down 1-0 in the Netherlands before the first XI lost by the same scoreline at West Ham on Sunday.

Another midweek cup game means more rotation but Nuno has not made wholesale changes again, with a mixture of squad and established players starting against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Dele Alli and Harry Winks have both been omitted from the squad, raising further doubts over their Spurs futures.

Summer signing Cristian Romero is establishing himself as an important figure for Spurs and keeps his place at centre-half, as he did in the last round of the Carabao Cup at Wolves. Pierluigi Gollini, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies all come into the back line.

In midfield, Nuno favours the protection offered by Oliver Skipp or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg alongside Giovani Lo Celso. Bryan Gil has quietly impressed in the cup games this season and earns another opportunity on the left wing.

The game offers another opportunity for Steven Bergwijn to build up fitness following an ankle injury but Harry Kane won’t get a rest, with 17-year-old Dane Scarlett not ready for the rough and tumble of facing a side like the Clarets.

Ryan Sessegnon is Spurs’ only injury absentee as he continues to work his way back from a hamstring problem and Matt Doherty returns to the squad.

“He’s back in the group, that’s good news,” Nuno said of Doherty ahead of the game.

“He’s going to be in the squad, but it’s up to us to decide the right moment to integrate all the players. The only bad news that we have at this moment is Ryan Sessegnon, he’s not able to join us yet.”
