Yahoo Finance Toyota recalls more than one million cars - including the Prius - on fire risk alert
TOYOTA said today it will recall more than one million vehicles that are at risk of catching fire. These include the hybrid Prius model, favoured by Uber drivers and Hollywood celebrities.
The Japanese cars giant said the wire harness that links to the hybrid power unit could wear down over time. This could cause an electrical short circuit and potentially a fire.
The recall affects vehicles produced in Japan between June 2015 and May 2018, and includes the plug-in version of the Prius and the C-HR compact crossover SUV sold in Japan, Europe, Australia and other countries.
Half the recalls are for cars in Japan. In the US, 192,000 Prius models will be recalled.
Toyota says one incident saw the car damaged, but no one had been injured.
Two years ago, Toyota recalled nearly three million cars including the Prius for leaky fuel tanks. It has also had problems with malfunctioning airbags.
The carmaker has reported issues with unintended acceleration in some models. Toyota saw profits his year jump 31% to 2.4 trillion yen (£1.7 billion).
Sales in America, however, have been largely flat of late.
