Transocean Ltd.'s stock is down 7.0%, but insiders still have about US$3.2k in profit after buying earlier this year

Transocean Ltd. (NYSE:RIG) insiders who acquired shares over the previous 12 months, can probably afford to ignore the recent 7.0% decline in the stock price. After accounting for the recent loss, the US$74k worth of shares they purchased is now worth US$78k, suggesting a good return on their investment.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Transocean insiders own 0.6% of the company, worth about US$16m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Transocean Tell Us?

The recent insider purchase is heartening. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest Transocean insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Transocean.
