A CEREMONIAL tree has just been planted in a popular Glasgow park.

A nationwide tree planting scheme named the Queen's Green Canopy (QGC) invited people across the UK to 'plant a tree for the Jubilee’ in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth.

To mark the planting of over a million trees nationwide under the scheme, a tree planting ceremony took place in Glasgow’s Tollcross Park, to celebrate Scotland’s efforts.

QGC's CEO, Colonel Dan Rex, was joined by Glasgow’s Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren and children and teachers from the local Winter Gardens Nursery to plant a tree in commemoration of the project's success.

"With the late Queen Elizabeth leading the way when she planted a tree with our patron, the then Duke of Rothesay, and local school children at Balmoral Castle, individuals, community groups, schools, Clan Centres, businesses, as well as public authorities, have all embraced the project.

"They have planted beautiful individual trees, stunning avenues, copses and forests, from the highlands and islands through the glens and across Scotland’s great cities.

"These plantings will benefit all of us for decades to come and provide a wonderful legacy to celebrate the life of the late Queen."

Glasgow City Council agreed to the ceremonial tree being planted within Tollcross Park, contributing to the wider tree planting proposals being developed for the park and many other greenspaces across the city.

Speaking on the planting, the Lord Provost said: "It was great fun and I know everyone involved is passionate about greening our communities.

"The Queen’s Green Canopy is a lasting gift we can all enjoy and take great pride and comfort in."

QGC Scotland committee member and Green Action Trust CEO, Derek Robertson, added: "I am delighted that the Green Action Trust played a part in the promotion and delivery of such a worthwhile campaign, which is a fitting legacy of Her late Majesty.

"Planting trees and protecting forests are simple, cost-effective ways to slow climate change, filter our air, enhance our communities and provide habitats for wildlife."
