Trent Alexander-Arnold injury: Liverpool star a major doubt for Man City clash with groin problem

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is a massive doubt for the club’s heavyweight Premier League showdown against Manchester City.

The England international did not travel with his Reds team-mates to Portugal on Tuesday for the Champions League clash with FC Porto.

Liverpool initially described the issue as a “sore groin”, though manager Jurgen Klopp has since expanded further, confirming it’s a muscle problem that is more serious than first thought.

As a result, the influential Alexander-Arnold is highly unlikely to feature for the early top-flight leaders when defending champions Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday.

Experienced utility man James Milner deputised at right-back in Porto, just as he did earlier this month when Alexander-Arnold - absent from England’s run to the European Championship final this summer due to a thigh injury - missed the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace through illness.

“Yeah, unfortunately [it’s an injury],” Klopp said of that latest setback.

“It was shortly after training [on Monday], Trent went in a little bit earlier but it didn’t look serious. We did further assessment and in the end it was serious. So, he is out for today for sure, he didn’t travel with us.

“And it doesn’t look great for the City game as well. It’s a muscle thing. We thought he was just a bit tired from the [Brentford] game but it was more and now we have to deal with that.”

After Liverpool’s thumping 5-1 win in Porto, Klopp suggested that Alexander-Arnold would also be unavailable for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Andorra and Hungary.

“So the situation when you play Saturday and Tuesday, the players who start the game - which Trent obviously did - have on Sunday no training, they have recovery. On Monday, the only session we have together, we pretty much walk through the things. We have meetings and on the pitch we just show the difference between the opponents, so there was no intensity really in the session,” he said.

“But Trent anyway in the middle of the session felt his adductor and in that area he has now a little injury. Obviously when you have something with your muscle, it’s not likely for Sunday - no muscle injury heals that quick.

“After that, it’s internationals. I don’t want to make the decision for him but what I heard, I don’t think it will be possible for him to be with the national team - but the other people have to decide that in the end. But hopefully after that he will be ready again, but we don’t know exactly.”
