As a Black woman with type 4 hair, I don’t necessarily trust hair tools from brands that claim they’re “for all hair types.” With that said, one of Drew Barrymore’s new Flower Beauty hair tools kind of made me eat my words.

Hopefully, you’re no stranger to Barrymore’s Flower Beauty makeup brand. Now, the actor and talk show host is expanding the line with six new Flower Beauty hair tools. The line includes an Ionic Pro Dryer, a travel Ionic Pro Dryer, a Ceramic Straightening Brush, a Ceramic Styling Iron, a Titanium Rotating Styling Iron and — the device I tried — the Ionic Volumizing Styler.

Throughout quarantine, I’ve developed a special relationship with my hair, getting to a place where I do with it what I like. But, with hair tools as intriguing as this one, curiosity got the best of me.

The Volumizing Styler says it’s capable of working on all hair types including long, short, thinning, thick, coarse, curly, straight and frizzy. With similar styler tools that had historically promised the same, the heat often wasn’t evenly distributed throughout the tool, it wasn’t hot enough, the brush would have thermal bristles — not ionic ones — for my coils to get tangled in or I was guaranteed to burn my scalp, getting the tool too close to my roots.

Having thick, coarse, bleachedanddyed type four hair, I prepped my locks with the Flawless by Gabrielle Union Hydrating Co-Wash Cleansing Hair Conditioner. After sectioning and twisting my hair with the Flawless Shine Enhancing Heat Protection Spray, I did a quick blow out. Then, I went to work with the styler.

How The Volumizing Styler Works

To be honest, I just wanted to see if I could use the Volumizing Styler to straighten any strand of my hair. There are only two heat settings on this bad boy — 350 degrees Fahrenheit and 400 degrees Fahrenheit — and yet it glided through my ends. I easily achieved this cutesy look within a fairly quick time for my hair (like 45 minutes). It only required a flick of the wrist and the classic Luster’s Pink Holding Spray to keep the curl tight.

What’s more? The styler is $40 and already a best seller with 4.6 stars at Walmart.

What I love about this styler is that the only hot portion is the barrel. The ionic bristles are even cool-to-the-touch, so it was virtually impossible for me to burn myself while styling. Also, the device heats up quickly. When turned on, a light blinks for a minute to indicate heating. When the red light is solid, you’re good to get voluminous.

Considering the line dropped in late September, this tool already has over 150 reviews. One shopper said this styler offers “so much volume.”

“This styler gives soft, frizz-free curls,” one customer wrote. “I can get so much volume by lifting my hair and curling the styler around the base of my hair. The styler is the perfect, hand-held size.”

One of the other Flower Beauty hair tools that can compete with the Volumizing Style in terms of reviews is the Titanium Rotating Styling Iron. The rounded barrel helps to straighten and shine hair, while the ionic bristles help you achieve frizz-free waves or curls.

This blow dryer won’t strip the moisture in your hair, per the brand’s description. There are also two heat settings, and a wheel dial to increase or decrease the breeze. Plus, this lightweight blow dryer also comes with a detachable nozzle.

The baby version of the blow dryer is actually handy for jet setters. The difference between this one and the full-size version is the controls. This travel version has a six-foot cord with only two heat settings and two varying voltage capabilities. The full-size blow dryer, on the other hand, has a nine inches cord with a wheel dial.

With four different heat settings up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit, this styling iron has a rounded design to make curls pop. The ceramic plates allow for heat to move through them evenly and consistently. Plus, the professional swivel cord lets you work without getting tangled up.

The last Flower Beauty hair tool in this line is the Ceramic Straightening Brush. Featuring ionic bristles to reduce frizz, the heat runs through the ceramic plates surrounded by each bristle. Made for one-handed styling, the brush lets you to get your go-to look in half the time.

After trying the Flower Beauty hair tool, I have to say I’m excited to try more so I can achieve TikTok-worthy hairstyles. Being that we’re still in quarantine, turning looks is all I’m doing right now.
