'I Tried Glossier's New Ultralip Lipstick Line and Here Are My Honest Thoughts'

Between the shiny, millennial-centric brands delivering fresh drops through your letter box, the more established, cult buys and the indie outfits selling a fine line in 'natural and organic' products, the beauty landscape has never felt more cluttered.

To help you to navigate this brave new world of retinol, AHAs, jade rollers and double cleansing, WH beauty editor, Perdita Nouril, is here to try and test the new drops that are making their way into her (very full) bathroom, via her new column, Beauty Dispatch.

Every month, she'll share the freshly released heroes that she loves, ready to let you know where to spend your skin and hair care cash.

This month: Glossier has dropped a new lipstick line. So, is Ultralip any good? And more to the point, for Generation G fans, is it better?

Glossier are on fire at the moment, no? It was only a few weeks ago they dropped the incredible new Cleanser Concentrate, the brand's acid-laced, exfoliating face wash that gently melts make-up and boosts your glow. And prior to that, everyone went wild for the Futuredure-maker's exfoliating bar that buffs and smooths dry skin.

This time around the purveyors of all things illuminating have dropped a brand new lipstick line. Say 'hello' to Glossier Ultralip, a glossy lip tint that the brand is hailing as the (cashmere) sweatpants of lipstick. So, is this new drop the make-up hero we never knew we needed? Or is a just hype? Here's everything you need to know...

What is Glossier Ultralip?

Essentially it's a souped-up lip balm. Glossier claims it has the 'rich moisture of a balm, the sheen of a gloss, and the buildable color of a lip tint, without the hassle of layering multiple products.'

In a world of skin minimalism and paired back routines, the timing of this multi-tasker couldn't be better. After all, who wants to carry around a liner, lipstick, balm and/ or gloss in their purse? Plus, lip balms are the perfect lightweight addition to your make-up kit come summer, thanks to their comfortable and buttery-soft formula.

How many shades of Glossier Ultralip are there?

There are 9 shades in total.

  • Villa is a dusty rose

  • Portrait is a cherry blossom pink

  • Fête is a watermelon red

  • Lucite is a sheer peony pink

  • Vesper is a rich fuchsia

  • Trench is a toffee brown

  • Ember is a deep mauve

  • Cachet is a walnut brown

  • Coupe is a blood orange

Is Glossier lipstick long-lasting?

Yes, I found I didn't need to reapply it for a good few hours. Plus, the formula really is super nourishing thanks to a list of ingredients you're likely to find hanging around in your skincare arsenal. Think meadowfoam seed oil, watermelon seed oil, and a blend of 4 molecular weights of hydrating hyaluronic acid that draws in and holds onto moisture so that your lips don't dry out or the colour doesn't fade after 30 minutes.

Is Glossier Ultralip better than Generation G?

For me, it's a 'no' I'm afraid. It's not that Ultralip isn't a brilliant product, because it really does offer high shine coverage, it's just that Generation G lipstick, is well, better.

In my opinion, the wash of colour that Generation G offers is superior and lasts longer. I've also never managed to find a matte lipstick (for this price, anyway) that doesn't fade or dry out after five minutes and leave you with those savage lipstick lines that make you look like a 90's throwback. For me, Generation G is the ultimate lipstick. Soz, Ultralip.

Glossier Ultralip: The Verdict

I'm a huge lipstick fan in general, I'll take it over eyeshadow or mascara any day because for me, it holds the power to truly transform my face and my mood. So, I'll confess, when it comes to any product that you apply to your lips, I'm a tough critic.

There's much to applaud with this new drop. Firstly, the shade range is extensive enough that there is something for everyone – big tick. (Note: I prefer the Fete and Coupe shades to the others as they are bright and sunny shades of red, my fave.) From an ethics point of view, I like the range is vegan.

As for the finish, the sheen has that Goldilocks vibe going on, in that it's not too much or too little. It's the perfect amount of mirror-like shine, meaning that it catches the light beautifully without looking too wet. The formula didn't feel heavy or gloopy on my lips, either.

Also worth noting is the price. Compared to some of the hydrating colour balms that have recently launched, it's a steal for only 14 quid. My final word? If glosses are your thing, then I highly recommend Glossier Ultralip. If you stand firm in the matte camp, sick to generation G.
