We taste tested Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’s Valentine’s Day donuts

Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ have both released Valentine’s Day donuts this year, but which menu is worth shopping?

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, another holiday where you express love with material possessions, which are my favorite kind of possessions.

In the spirit of the season, both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ have already unveiled their Valentine’s Day treats — perhaps in case you have multiple Valentines and need to spread out donut purchases throughout the first two weeks of February.

Krispy Kreme launched four new heart-shaped donuts: Sprinkled Heart (filled with cake batter), Sugar Cookie Heart (filled with Sugar Cookie Kreme), Strawberries & Kreme Heart (filled with strawberry icing) and Chocolate Caramel Heart (filled with caramel).

Not to be upstaged, Dunkin’ came out with its own heart-shaped donuts: The Brownie Batter Donut (filled with chocolate buttercream) and the Cupid’s Choice (filled with cream, topped with strawberry icing).

Of course, Dunkin’ couldn’t resist releasing another limited edition coffee, the Pink Velvet Macchiato — a drink described as “whimsical and playful” on Dunkin’s blog that supposedly tastes like “the experience of biting into a delicious red velvet cupcake.”

Thus, I once again found myself purchasing everything off the special menus for my Valentine — that is, myself, because self-love is important.

Also, I would hate for people to buy the wrong donuts for their crushes, which has happened to me and it was a mistake because, duh, I do not like donuts.

Krispy Kreme’s Valentine’s Donuts

Name originality: 2/10. Each donut name is a description of what the donut actually is (although I am awarding points for changing the spelling of “cream” to “kreme”).

Taste: Overall, 5/10. The Strawberries & Kreme one, which I desperately wanted to like, tasted like someone guessed what strawberries were and then made it taste more poisonous. I hate caramel, so the Chocolate Caramel Heart was not sold on me at all.

Presentation: 8/10. They come in a cute little box.

Pricing: 6/10. $9 for all four — as someone who has willing spent money on a bottomless brunch and not touched my food, this seems pretty reasonable.

Dunkin’s Valentine’s Donuts

Name originality: 9/10. A lot of thought was put into these names! I, of course, refused to say “Cupid’s Choice” out loud when ordering, but I love the sentiment.

Taste: Overall, 6/10. These tasted exactly like what I expected from Dunkin’. Nothing too flashy or over-the-top.

Presentation: 2/10. Tossed into a Dunkin’ bag. If you’re buying these for your crush, consider investing in a gift bag or something because otherwise, it looks like you totally forgot (this is specifically directed at my boyfriend, if he is reading this).

Pricing: 7/10. $3.18 for two big donuts, plus $4.49 for the medium iced Pink Velvet Macchiato, which does not get its own scoring system because I absolutely hated it.

The Winner

Overall, I’m going to go out on a limb and say go for Dunkin’ for Valentine’s Day, because I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t do something absolutely insane for their donuts.
