'I Tried Kylie Jenner's Skincare Line and These Are My Honest Thoughts'

From Women's Health

Between the shiny, millennial-centric brands delivering fresh drops through your letter box, the more established, cult buys and the indie outfits selling a fine line in 'natural and organic' products, the beauty landscape has never felt more cluttered.

To help you to navigate this brave new world of retinol, AHAs, jade rollers and double cleansing, WH beauty editor, Perdita Nouril, is here to try and test the new drops that are making their way into her (very full) bathroom, via her new column, Beauty Dispatch.

Here, she'll share the freshly released heroes that she loves: ready to let you know where to spend your skin and hair care cash. This time around she tries out Kylie Jenner's skincare line which has just landed on UK shores.

When Kylie Skin first launched back in May 2019, it quickly became one of the US's top-selling skincare brands. While the initial naysayers were quick to pick apart the collection on social media —'WALNUT KERNELS IN A FACE SCRUB?!' they lambasted — the skincare collection quickly became a hit with not only Kardashian/Jenner fans but skincare enthusiasts up and down the country.

A year later, Kylie Skin has finally made its way across the pond, launching exclusively into Selfridges and Harrods and, in ding so, solidifying its place in the UK's luxury skincare market.

But is it really worth the hype? Or is Kylie Skin simply a product of clever marketing and Instagrammable pink packaging? And if it is any good - how do you know what's worth the buck?

To get you filled in, I tried out the entire Kylie Skin range. Here's what I found...

1. Cleanser

Foaming Face Wash

What they say: A pampering foaming face wash infused with glycerin to gently cleanse without stripping the skin’s natural moisture.

What WH says: This cleanser was impressive, it lathered up really well so that make-up melted away easily enough. My skin was left super soft (that will be kiwi oil) an and it had a nice clean delicate scent. So far so good...

2. Exfoliater

Walnut Face Scrub

What they say: A gentle yet effective face scrub with an amazing blend of skin-smoothing fruit extracts and ultra-fine walnut powder, designed to buff away dead skin cells to reveal a soft, radiant complexion.

What WH says: I'm with the naysayers on this one. Granted the walnut pieces are teeny tiny, but they are super abrasive and i'm not just down with any kind of physical exfoliation. While the walnut might shift stubborn dead skin cells, I know having spoken to enough derms over the years that it might also cause tiny micro tears to the skin. I won't be giving up my glycolic acid for this any time soon.

3. Toner

Vanilla Milk Toner

What they say: A gentle alcohol-free toner which helps rebalance skin and preps for the next moisture step. Formulated with avocado oil and apple extract, it helps soothe, purify and improve the appearance of pores.

What WH says: I'm not usually a big fan of toners (never saw the point and most of are too drying) but this just might be one to change my mind. It had a brilliant softening and mattifying effect, meaning I didn't need to bother with a make-up primer in the morning. The fragrance is hardcore, which i thought my cause irritation but no redness has reared it head, much to my delight.

4. Serum

Vitamin C Serum

What they say: Combining vitamins and glycerin, the Kylie Skin Vitamin C Serum deeply moisturises the upper layers of your skin. The rich yet non-greasy formula helps brighten and improve the appearance of dull skin for a glowing healthy look.

What WH says: Any skincare aficionado will know that Vitamin C can takes weeks to work and I've only been trying this for a month now, while I haven't noticed a huge difference myself, the team are adamant my glow is noteworthy. The serum has a nice texture and isn't greasy either.

5. Moisturiser

Face Moisturiser

What they say: An every day moisturiser infused with a blend of humectants and emollients to help hydrate skin without heaviness, greasiness or oiliness. Formulated with oat and orange peel extracts, this indulging formula conditions, soothes and softens the skin for a soft, non-greasy finish.

What WH says: This was a real hero. It did exactly what it said on the tin. My skin was left baby soft and the hydration lasted all day. It wasn't heavily fragranced either, which I always think is a sign of a decent face cream.

6. Eye Cream

Eye Cream

What they say: The rich formula contains a blend of caffeine, green tea, vitamin E and pomegranate extracts and helps brighten, hydrate and reduce puffiness, dark circles and the first appearances of fine lines and wrinkles.

What WH says: This definitely gave a nice hydrating effect, which always helps to dial down fine lines. Plus, massaging the cool formula in with the flat applicator tip certainly helped to depuff my eyes bags first thing. As for dark circles? Nope, it did nothing. Although, I will say I'm yet to find an eye cream that can.

7. Face Mask

Hydrating Face Mask

What they say: Formulated to soothe, moisturise and improve the look and feel of your skin, while helping reduce puffiness. The formula is packed with antioxidants, vitamins and essential ceramides to help moisturise and nourish the skin.

What WH says: This was a real skin treat. Used one to two times a week, it helped to supercharge my routine by keeping my skin soft and barrier function healthy.

Kylie Jenner Skin Routine: My verdict

So, is Kylie Skin good? All in all, it's not a bad range. I think if you're new to skincare the there are some great products that work as brilliant jumping off products. The cleanser, toner, moisturiser and mask do their job admirably and are decent sizes, too. I also think if you're yet to get on the vitamin C hype, the serum could be a great gateway product into the world of actives.
