We tried TikTok’s latest fast food hack: Homemade McDonald’s McGriddles

McGriddles
McGriddles

There are few breakfast snacks more nostalgic than McDonald’s McGriddles.

Love them or hate them, you probably have at least some history with the sandwich, which features two pancakes as its buns. It’s easy to see why social media is obsessed with making them at home.

Remaking fast food staples isn’t always as easy as it looks — but in this case, TikTok users claim to have cracked the code. Lately, a viral hack has been trending on the app, and it claims to offer a “genius” solution for making homemade McGriddles.

The secret? Mason jars. As TikTok user Allyson Bayard shows in her version of the recipe, the jar lids are perfect for grilling up syrupy, bun-sized pancakes. From there, you can just slap together your sandwich and enjoy.

TikTokers have widely praised the hack, with many claiming they’ll never need to visit McDonald’s again.

“I’m never buying another [McGriddle], THANK YOU,” one user commented on Bayard’s clip.

“This just changed my life,” another added.

But is the hack really that revolutionary? To find out, In The Know’s editors decided to try it themselves.

How to make TikTok’s homemade McDonald’s McGriddles

To recreate the full McGriddle experience, you’ll need a few simple ingredients:

  • Eggs

  • Sliced American cheese

  • Frozen sausage patties

  • Maple syrup

  • The pancake mix of your choice

  • One or more mason jars

The process here is very straightforward. Heat a griddle or large skillet on high, and be sure to add some oil or nonstick spray. Once it’s hot, add the mason jar lids, which should also be sprayed or oiled so they don’t stick to the batter.

Next, add a pour of your pre-mixed pancake batter into each mason jar lid. Then add some syrup to each mini-pancake. Cook each one until it’s solid and starting to brown, then remove the lid and flip to cook the other side.

From there, you’re just making a sloppy, fast food-worthy breakfast sandwich. Fry a few sausages, topping each with cheese at the end to melt. To cook the eggs, you can also use the jar lids — in case you want to make everything nice and circular.

And … you’ve done it. Congratulations: Stack your sandwich together and bite into a mouthful of homemade, grease-loaded bliss.

Does TikTok’s homemade McDonald’s McGriddles hack actually work?

So, is this hack actually worth it? The short answer is yes — but there are some complications.

It takes some mastery to get the pancakes into that perfect, ring-shaped form. In a few tries at home, it’s not very easy. That said, anything round enough to make a sandwich with is a win in this writer’s book (and his stomach), so ultimately, it’s not the end of the world.

Of course, the homemade McGriddles are also cheaper, and depending on what kind of person you are, they might save the embarrassment of showing up at the McDonald’s drive-thru three times in one week.

Also, they taste pretty decent — if you like McGriddles, at least. This writer, who was practically raised on the sandwiches, thought that flavor was nearly the same as at McDonald’s.

Meanwhile, his mother (who actually raised him) was more skeptical. After trying a sample of her son’s creation, she literally took the pancake out of her mouth and just ate the sausage.

Clearly, this hack isn’t for everyone. Sorry mom!
