Two US Fighter Jets Crash Off North Carolina

Four US airmen have been rescued after two Navy fighter jets crashed off the coast of North Carolina.

The two F/A-18 Super Hornets went down during a routine training mission on Thursday morning, a Navy spokesman said.

Initial reports indicated the jets collided, but a Naval Air Force spokeswoman would not confirm a collision took place, instead calling it an "in-flight mishap".

No other details on the crash have been released.

The four crew members, who are based out of Virginia Beach, were airlifted to hospital with minor injuries after a commercial fishing vessel plucked them from the water.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said the airmen were in "very high spirits".

Officials are "happy to have brought everyone home safely", Lieutenant Commander Krystyn Pecora told reporters.

Navy spokesman Ensign Mark Rockwellpate said the cause of the crash was under investigation.
