Uber's bookings continued to rise in the second quarter despite the American ride-hailing company being embroiled in a string of scandals.

The company saw its bookings double on last year to $8.7bn during the period, according to Uber's latest results published by US website Axios, suggesting customers are not being put off recent controversies

The boost, powered by a surge in bookings across developing markets such as Russia, helped bring losses down 14pc on last year to $645m.

The figures cover a period which saw Uber's chief executive Travis Kalanick step down as the firm released the results of a lengthy investigation into the company which was triggered by allegations of widespread sexism and harassment.

Despite the claims, which has seen a string of senior executives leave, the San Francisco-based company said its revenues more than doubled on a year ago to $1.75bn.
