UK GAS-Milder weather depresses within-day prices, day-ahead up on outlook for colder days

Jan 5 (Reuters) - British prompt gas prices were mixed on Friday, mostly weather-driven. Milder-than-expected temperatures curbed within-day demand causing prices to fall, but forecasts for colder days coming boosted the day-ahead, traders said. * Day-ahead gas was up 0.80 pence at 53.20 pence per therm at 0915 GMT. * Within-day gas fell by 1.25 pence to 51.50 pence per therm. * "For within-day the weather is very warm, and I have a surplus of gas which I need to get rid of, plus the flows are strong," said a gas trader explaining the lower price. * "The issue is that when I make a prediction for day-ahead, the next day the temperature is up slightly and I have a surplus," he added. * Forecasts for lower temperatures over the weekend and through next week were behind the day-ahead spike, a second trader said. * Britain's gas system was oversupplied by 33.0 million cubic metres (mcm), with demand forecast at 316.7 mcm and supply at 349.7 mcm/day, National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news) data showed. * Gas supply from Norway to Britain on Friday was stable at 135 mcm/day, close to the pipeline system's maximum capacity. * Average temperatures on Friday could reach 7 degrees Celsius in southern Britain and are forecast to decline to 4 degrees C on Monday, data from Britain's Met Office showed. * The February contract was down 0.95 pence at 53.25 pence/therm. * In the Dutch gas market, the day-ahead gas price at the TTF hub fell by 0.05 euro to 19.05 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). * The benchmark Dec (Shanghai: 600875.SS - news) -17 EU carbon contract was flat at 7.77 euros a tonne. * Thomson Reuters (Dusseldorf: TOC.DU - news) analyst view: http://emea1.apps.cp.extranet.thomsonreuters.biz/cms/?pageid=united-kingdom-gas (Reporting by Lefteris Karagiannopoulos in Oslo; Editing by Susan Fenton)
