UK GAS-Prices fall on mild temperatures, oversupply

LONDON, Feb 21 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices fell on Thursday morning as mild temperatures and strong imports from Norway led to an oversupplied system.

* Within-day gas price down 1.23 pence at 45.65 p/therm at 0916 GMT.

* Day-ahead gas price down 0.90 p at 45.80 p/therm.

* Traders said mild temperatures were expected for the rest of February, curbing demand for gas for heating.

* Average temperatures in Britain were expected to be 9.7 degrees Celsius, some 1.1 degrees higher than initially forecast, Eikon Refinitiv data showed.

* Gas system oversupplied by 17.8 million cubic metres (mcm) with demand forecast at 236.2 mcm and flows at 254 mcm/day, National Grid data showed.

* "There is substantial oversupply in the UK today caused by Langeled returning to max capacity," analysts at Refinitiv said in a daily research note.

* Imports from Norway through the Langeled pipeline were around 74 mcm/day, up from around 69 mcm/day the previous day, National Grid data showed.

* Further out on the curve, prices also slipped.

* March contract down 0.80 p at 46.50 p/therm.

* Summer 2019 contract down 0.70 p at 45.60 p/therm.

* Day-ahead gas price at the Dutch TTF hub down 0.27 euro at 17.83 euros per megawatt hour.

* Benchmark Dec-19 EU carbon contract down 0.28 euro at 20.20 euros per tonne. (Reporting by Susanna Twidale; Editing by Dale Hudson)
