UK GAS-Prices fall as wind power output remains strong

LONDON, Jan 18 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices fell on Thursday as strong wind power output helped reduce the call on gas-fired power plants. * Day-ahead gas was 0.20 pence lower at 49.70 pence per therm at 1006 GMT. * Gas for immediate delivery declined by 0.50 pence to 49.75 pence per therm. * Peak wind power generation is forecast at 7.9 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday, following a new record of more than 10 GW on Wednesday, which has helped displace demand for gas in electricity generation, according to a trader and Elexon data. * Britain's gas system was balanced with demand forecast at 344.8 mcm and supply at 344.2 mcm/day, National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news) data showed. * Gas supply from Norway to Britain on Thursday fell 7 mcm/day to 123 mcm/day. * UK Continental Shelf production declined to 98 mcm/day from 112 mcm/day on Wednesday following a setback to flows through the St Fergus Perenco terminal. * Offshore maintenance will reduce throughout capacity at the terminal to 5.5 mcm/day from 1200 GMT on Thursday to Jan. 21, according to the terminal operator. * Average temperatures on Thursday could reach 5.4 degrees Celsius but should fall to between 2.3 and 3.7 degrees for the remainder of the week, according to Thomson Reuters (Dusseldorf: TOC.DU - news) weather data. * "Many areas across the UK will continue to see wet and windy weather over the next few days with showers falling as snow over higher ground," Britain's Met Office said. * Commercial and residential demand forecasts for Friday are 12 mcm/day higher at 263 mcm/day, according to Thomson Reuters analysts. * The February contract was down 1.15 pence at 49.85 pence/therm. * In the Dutch gas market, the day-ahead gas price at the TTF hub declined by 0.27 euro to 18.15 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). * The benchmark Dec (Shanghai: 600875.SS - news) -17 EU carbon contract rose by 0.11 euro to 8.29 euros a tonne. * Thomson Reuters analyst view: http://emea1.apps.cp.extranet.thomsonreuters.biz/cms/?pageid=united-kingdom-gas (Reporting by Oleg Vukmanovic; editing by Nina Chestney)
