UK GAS-Prices slip as supply overwhelms demand

* System over supplied by 7 mcm/day

* Temperatures forecast to fall below seasonal norm

LONDON, May 22 (Reuters) - British prompt gas prices eased on Friday as the oversupplied system, weaker oil prices and a steady flow of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker arrivals, kept prices under downward pressure.

Gas for within-day delivery was down 2.2 percent at 41.90 pence per therm at 0949 GMT, while gas for day-ahead delivery was down 0.1 percent at 42.60 pence per therm.

National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news) data showed supply was forecast at 200 million cubic metres (mcm) on Friday, while demand was seen at 193 mcm, showing the system was over supplied by 7 mcm.

"Bearish factors are overwhelming the UK gas market today with the system oversupplied due to lower domestic demand, pound strength, oil weakness and the continued glut of LNG all weighing on curve prices," said Wayne Bryan, analyst at consultancy Alfa Energy.

Bryan said the injection outage at Britain's largest gas storage site Rough was also bearish for gas demand.

Meteorologists forecast temperatures falling below normal levels from Saturday (Shenzhen: 002291.SZ - news) , which is likely to support demand for gas for heating.

"The production outage at Norway's Ormen Lange and below average temperatures forecast for the remainder of the month are the only bullish factors negating further downside," Bryan added.

Production at the 65 mcm/day capacity Ormen Lange field was shut on Tuesday for maintenance expected to last until June 28.

Shipments of LNG continued at a steady pace with the latest addition to upcoming arrivals being the Umm Slal tanker expected to arrive at the UK's South Hook LNG terminal on May. 29 from Qatar, according to the local port authority.

Gas for delivery in the third quarter was down 0.8 percent at 41.55 pence per therm.

In the Netherlands, the day-ahead gas price at the TTF hub was down 0.9 percent at 20.35 euros per megawatt-hour.

The benchmark European Union carbon price was trading 0.1 percent lower at 7.32 euros a tonne on ICE Futures Europe. (Reporting by Sarah McFarlane; Editing by Ahmed Aboulenein)
