UK GAS-Prompt prices climb on tight supply

* UK system 6 mcm short - National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news)

* Temperatures forecast to drop below average

Oct (HKSE: 3366-OL.HK - news) 8 (Reuters) - British gas prices were higher on Thursday, supported by an undersupplied system, as imports from the Netherlands dropped off.

Gas for instant delivery rose 0.70 pence per therm at 40.50 per therm by 0839 GMT, while prices for Friday rose 0.2 pence to 40.45 p/therm.

Forecast daily demand was 220 million cubic metres (mcm) per day, with supply at 214 mcm, leaving the system short 6 mcm, according to National Grid data.

"Prompt prices have bounced back from the lows of yesterday in line with tight supplies intra-day and expectations of cooler temperatures over the coming week," said Marcel Boonaert, head of trading and portfolio at Wingas UK.

The Met Office forecast temperatures will drop next week to levels slightly below average for this time of year.

Flows through the BBL pipeline from the Netherlands dried up, having briefly resumed on Wednesday.

"BBL flows have fallen back to zero, the softening in NBP (UK National Balancing Point) prices yesterday offering less of an incentive for Dutch shippers amid short supplies at TTF today," Boonaert said.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP - news) ' Theddlethorpe gas terminal is expected to restart on Thursday or Friday after its recent shutdown.

Gas deliveries from Norway via the UK's main import pipeline Langeled, were in line with the previous day at around 55 mcm, National Grid data showed.

December gas prices fell 0.57 pence to 42.63 p/therm.

In the Netherlands, the day-ahead gas price at the TTF hub was up 0.18 euro at 18.60 euros per megawatt hour.

In Europe's carbon market, the benchmark EU Allowance (EUA) rose by 0.03 euros to 8.14 euros a tonne. (Reporting by Sarah McFarlane; Editing by Elaine Hardcastle)
