UK GAS-Prompt prices up as cold snap sees demand spike

* System 8 mcm long - National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news)

* Met Office forecasts freezing temperatures overnight

LONDON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - British gas prices rose on Friday as demand jumped on cooler temperatures, with supply also rising to meet additional needs, capping the price upside.

Gas for next day delivery rose 0.40 pence per therm to 37.75 pence per therm by 1014 GMT.

The system was 8 million cubic metres (mcm) long, with demand forecast at 263, while supply was pegged at 271 mcm, National Grid data showed.

Thomson Reuters Point Carbon analysts said in a note that cold weather in the coming days was expected to drive up gas consumption.

"Supply is however very strong and is expected to remain so into Monday."

The Met Office forecast temperatures peaking at highs of six degrees in the north and ten degrees in the south on Friday, before dropping to around freezing overnight.

Supply was expected to be ample, however, more than meeting rising demand.

"The high export from Norway is upheld, BBL likewise and we see small improvements on Bacton Shell and South Hook sendout," Thomson Reuters Point Carbon said.

Oil prices fell to a near three-month low on Friday, dragging on later dated gas contracts.

Gas prices for December fell 0.40 pence to 37.20 pence/therm.

In the Netherlands the day-ahead gas price at the TTF hub was up 0.25 euros to 17.65 euros per megawatt hour.

In Europe's carbon market the benchmark EU Allowance (EUA) fell 0.04 euros to 8.59 euros a tonne. (Reporting by Sarah McFarlane; Editing by Mark Potter)
