UK GAS-Prompt prices rise as cooler weather boosts demand

* System 18 mcm short -National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news)

* Temperatures forecast to remain below average

Oct (HKSE: 3366-OL.HK - news) 13 (Reuters) - British gas prices rose on Tuesday as lower temperatures boosted demand and left the system undersupplied.

Gas for within day delivery rose 1.15 pence per therm to 40.50 per therm by 0720 GMT, while prices for Wednesday rose 0.15 pence to 40.50 p/therm.

Forecast daily demand was 255 million cubic metres (mcm) per day, with supply at 237 mcm, leaving the system 18 mcm short, National Grid data showed.

Demand was well above the seasonal norm of around 201 mcm.

"The start of colder weather has shaken the demand side and remains the key source of market support in the next two weeks," Energy Aspects said in a note.

Thomson Reuters Point Carbon data indicated temperatures were expected to remain below normal levels until at least the end of the week.

The return of flows at ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP - news) ' Theddlethorpe gas terminal following operational and gas specification issues helped on the supply side.

December gas prices fell 0.3 pence to 41.95 p/therm.

In the Netherlands, the day-ahead gas price at the TTF hub was down 0.26 euro at 18.42 euros per megawatt hour.

In Europe's carbon market, the benchmark EU Allowance (EUA) rose by 0.01 euros to 8.31 euros a tonne. (Reporting by Sarah McFarlane; editing by Jason Neely)
