Yahoo Finance UK records 166 Covid deaths and 34,460 new cases
The UK has recorded 166 more deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test in the past 24 hours.
This takes the official death toll to 135,621.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 160,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
The figure is down from Tuesday when 203 deaths were recorded. By comparison on Monday, 49 deaths were reported.
Additionally, as of 9am Wednesday, 34, 460 new cases were reported which was up from 31, 564 on Tuesday.
Government data up to September 21 shows of the 93,200,697 Covid jabs given in the UK, 48,644,692 were first doses, a rise of 26,989 on the previous day.
The 44,556,005 were second doses, an increase of 43,433.
Earlier on Wednesday, England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said any child aged between 12 and 15 who doesn’t get vaccinated will catch Covid at some point.
Professor Whitty said unvaccinated children are “likely to get an infection at some point between 12 and 15.”
He was facing questions from MPs on the Education Committee about the inclusion of children in the Government’s Covid-19 vaccination programme.
He told MPs: “Let’s make an assumption that the great majority of children who’ve not currently had Covid-19 are going to get it at some point over the next period.
“It won’t be necessarily in the next two or three months but they will get it sooner or later.”
But addressing the Commons education committee, Prof Whitty added: “Vaccination will reduce that risk.”
