UK records over 10,000 new Covid-19 cases and five more deaths

Watch: UK cases rise by 10,633

The UK has reported five more deaths within 28 days of a positive test for coronavirus and 10,633 new cases.

The number of cases has risen by over a thousand compared to Sunday where 9,284 cases, of mostly the Delta variant, were recorded.

Over the last week, there have been 74 deaths, an increase of 12.7 per cent compared to the week before.

Last Monday there were 3 deaths reported in the UK with 7,742 new cases.

It came as Boris Johnson insisted it is “looking good” for the lifting of coronavirus restrictions on July 19 despite rising cases.

The Prime Minister said the date looked set to be the “terminus point” for England’s lockdown even though hospital admissions were increasing, with more patients in intensive care.

He did not exclude the possibility of restrictions being needed again if the country faced a “rough winter” with the NHS under strain from a combination of Covid-19 and flu.

The Prime Minister told reporters that cases of the Delta coronavirus variant first identified in India were going up by about 30% a week “hospitalisations up by roughly the same amount and so, sadly, are ICU admissions”.

“We’ve got to be cautious, but we’ll be we’ll be following the data the whole time,” he told reporters during a laboratory visit in Hertfordshire.

Hundreds of anti-lockdown protesters lined the streets of Whitehall on what was supposed to be the date of unlocking before the Prime Minister moved it back to July 19.

They booed MPs driving into the Houses of Parliament and chanted “no more lockdown”.

One arrested man told reporters: “I will not be silenced by Boris Johnson or the rest of the scum.”
