UK town tops worldwide list of places to visit in 2021
Though 2020 was a write-off as far as far-flung holidays were concerned, it did give us a chance to explore the UK's holiday hotspots, from the rugged terrain of Norfolk, to the beaches of Devon and the mountain ranges of Scotland.
And one part of the country in particular caught the attention of British staycationers, with its wild moorland and beautiful sandy beaches.
Cornwall, on England’s rugged southwestern tip, is home to picturesque harbour villages such as Fowey and Falmouth in the South and towering cliffs and seaside resorts like Newquay, known for surfing, in the North.
And now the popular Cornish coastal town of St Ives has received further accolade, as the only UK town to make it onto the world 'emerging destinations' in the world list, as part of Tripadvisor's Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards for Destinations.
The travel review site announced the winners of its annual awards today, with the Cornish gem coming in at number five as one of the places travellers want to visit next.
And it's easy to see why. The town is built on a narrow peninsula fringed with sandy beaches. Radiating out from the idyllic harbour are a maze of painfully quaint cobbled streets lined with fishermen's cottages. And if all this wasn't enough, St Ives has a rich artistic heritage which is celebrated with a plethora of galleries from the small to the internationally acclaimed.
TripAdvisor spokesperson Hayely Coleman explained: 'These are destinations that travellers want to visit next – whether an existing tourism gem, or an off-the-radar spot not yet firmly on the map for international travellers.'
'It is no secret that St Ives is a well loved and long established tourist haven, with its picturesque harbour, beautiful beaches and buzzing art scene, but its place on this list shows just how much travellers are missing it and longing to visit again, once COVID-19 restrictions ease.'
Outside of the UK, Martinique in the Caribbean was named as the world’s top emerging destination, followed by Panama City Beach in Florida, and Brazil’s Armacao dos Buzios.
