We tried all the bestselling nut butters

It's a question we've all asked: which really is the best nut butter?

Ever since wellness gurus like Ella Mills introduced us to almond butter, the nut butter market has exploded — and we've all realised there's much more to life than the humble peanut butter we ate as kids.

But, with almond butter, cashew butter, dark roast peanut butter, cocoa and cashew butter, how are you meant to choose which one to add to your weekly shop?

Price points on nut butters can vary hugely with supermarket own-brands often costing under two pounds a jar, while other high-end brands sold in shops like Plant Organic reaching nearer six pounds. That's a lot of pounds per peanut!

To save you some money and make sure you spread only the best on your morning sourdough, we've taste-tested a whole range to create the ultimate nut butter ranking.

Also, FYI, we haven't included a 'best for health' or 'healthiest nut butter' category because we're big supporters of intuitive eating, and if you want to eat nut butter we're of the opinion that you should jolly well go ahead.

In addition, you won’t find brands that include added sugars or artificial flavourings as they simply don't stand up to the competition, so all the products ranked below are either 100% nut or close to.

How we test the best nut butters

Our nut butter-loving panel tucked into 19 jars from budget-friendly supermarkets and leading brands to see which really was the tastiest spread. Whether you prefer crowd-pleasing peanut or are up for branching out with cashew, hazelnut or almond spreads — we tried classic, flavoured, smooth and crunchy versions to bring you this definitive nut butter ranking.

Best nut butters: The best peanut butters for flavour

Number one peanut butter for flavour: Manilife Deep Roast Crunchy Peanut Butter

Nothing else came close to ManiLife's crunchy peanut butter, especially when spread on our morning sourdough. In fact, we fear it might have ruined all other peanut butters for us going forward. The texture is easily spreadable but huge half peanuts add a satisfying crunch. Rich, deeply nutty and a little bit salty — it’s simply divine. If you’re as sold as us, you can currently buy a kilo of it on Amazon for £9.99 (we’re stockpiling).

Number two peanut butter for flavour: Pic's Peanut Butter Crunchy

While Pic's isn't sold in loads of stores, it's worth picking it up when you see it because boy is it tasty — like a bowl of crunchy nut cornflakes crossed with a Snickers bar. Made with just nuts and a pinch of sea salt, this is classic peanut butter at its best.

Best nut butters: The best peanut butters for value

Number one peanut butter for value: Aldi Crunchy Peanut Butter

Made from 100% peanuts and only £1.15 a jar, this peanut butter from Aldi tastes good, tastes natural and doesn't cost the earth (literally, you won’t find any nasty palm oil here either). Bravo Aldi. The only downside is you’ll have to buy it in store, rather than online.

Number two peanut butter for value: Meridian Crunchy Peanut Butter

Cheap peanut butter often contains lots of added sugar, but that’s not the case with Meridian’s great value jar. It’s just whole roasted skin-on peanut — and our testers found it made a cracking satay sauce.

Best nut butters: The best almond butter

Number one almond butter: MyProtein All-Natural Almond Butter

Made with 100% skin-on almonds and absolutely nothing else, at £17.99 for a kilo, it’s actually pretty good value. Gently roasted for a crowd-pleasing flavour, you’ll find nutty chunks evenly spread throughout.

Best nut butters: The best cashew butters

Number one cashew butter: Biona Cashew Nut Butter

The Biona range offers a strong choice of nut butters, with well balanced flavours and textures, and its cashew butter is no exception. It’s surprisingly sweet but all-natural, made with nothing but organic cashews. The mild flavour was a hit with our testers, who thought this would be best spread on waffles.

Number two cashew butter: Pana Cashew Caramel

We loved the rich, caramel-spiked flavour of this organic cashew butter. It's not cheap but we found the runny consistency meant a little went a long way, especially when using it to drizzle over ice cream. It’s sweetened with coconut sugar to keep things 100% natural.

Best nut butters: The best flavoured nut butters

Number one flavoured nut butter: Pip & Nut Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Almond Butter

Pip & Nut is unbeatable when it comes to flavoured nut butters, and this special edition chocolate sea salt version is our current favourite. We've kept a jar of this on our desk, and it's become our go-to for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

Number two flavoured nut butter: Whole Earth Smooth Peanut Butter With Honey, £4

Whole Earth’s smooth peanut butter blends sweet liquid honey through its signature blend, to create a sweet and salty flavour. Needless to say, it’s delicious and the perfect option for making energy bites for whenever a sugar dip hits.
