Undergrowth searched in hunt for man who vanished in 1992

Police investigating the suspected murder of a disabled man who disappeared in 1992 have begun searching a steep bank near where he vanished.

Steven Clark’s elderly parents Doris and Charles were arrested on suspicion of his murder last year but were told in February that they had been released without charge.

When their 23-year-old son went missing in December 1992, they said he had been on a walk with his mother, went into a public toilet in Saltburn and after waiting for him to emerge, Mrs Clark went back to the family home in Marske, Cleveland.

They never saw him again and no body has ever been found.

Police searched their property and garden in 2020 after a cold case review.

Now specialist officers have begun a search of Saltburn Bank and will clear undergrowth in an operation expected to last several days.

Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page said the team will use modern-day forensic techniques.

He said: “The investigation into Steven’s disappearance still continues, with the latest searches of the area around Saltburn Bank.

“We will be in the area throughout this week and would like to thank the public for their patience as the searches take place.

“We continue to appeal for information to help us find Steven, who we believe has come to harm at the hands of a third party.

“The searches in Saltburn follow others that have been carried out as part of our ongoing investigation, and on information available to the Cold Case Review Team.”

The force has never named Mr Clark’s parents as suspects but the couple have talked publicly about their ordeal and are the subject of an ITV documentary titled Accused Of Murdering Our Son – The Steven Clark Story.

Mr Clark had difficulty walking following a traffic accident when he was a boy.
