Unite Group (LON:UTG) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 101% Total Return On Their Investment

Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. And the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. For example, long term The Unite Group plc (LON:UTG) shareholders have enjoyed a 80% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 21% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 34% , including dividends .

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Unite Group has made a profit in the past. However, it made a loss in the last twelve months, suggesting profit may be an unreliable metric at this stage. So it might be better to look at other metrics to try to understand the share price.

The modest 1.1% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 6.0% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Unite Group is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Unite Group will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Unite Group's TSR for the last 5 years was 101%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Unite Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 34% over one year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 15% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Unite Group better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Unite Group (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
