TikTok users dumbfounded by home chef’s ‘upsetting’ breakfast-making hack: ‘[That] can’t be healthy’
A TikTok user is going viral after sharing a hack for how to make an omelet in a bag — but not everyone agrees it’s a good idea.
The breakfast-making hack, shared by user Kyle Istook, is just the latest egg-cooking video to blow up on the app. In the past, users have shared their methods for separating egg whites with bread, cracking an egg by dropping it and frying an egg without flipping it.
Istook’s clip, meanwhile, shows how you can make an entire omelet in a bag, all in just a few steps.
“Would you ever try this?” the dad captioned his video.
Istook’s omelet-cooking method, which many viewers found controversial, begins with the TikToker cracking a few eggs into a Ziplock bag. From there, Istook squeezes the eggs to break them up, then adds some salt, pepper and shredded cheese.
Finally, Istook drops his bag into a pot of boiling water, eventually removing it to reveal a rounded, fully cooked omelet.
Results aside, many commenters were freaked out by the video. Some called it “upsetting” and questioned whether the hack was safe to try.
Do these talked-about products actually show up on darker skin tones?
“Not really sure if it’s safe to boil plastic,” one user wrote.
“Boiling food in a sandwich bag can’t be healthy,” another added.
However, it’s not clear whether or not the method is actually unsafe. As CNET reported in 2018, cooking food in a plastic bag is essentially a homemade version of sous vide-style cooking.
Ziplock’s website, meanwhile, states that its bags are free of most toxins common in plastics, including BPA and Dioxin. Still, that doesn’t mean you should boil the bags: Research has shown that Ziplock bags will begin melting at a temperature of around 195 degrees Fahrenheit, which is below water’s boiling temperature.
So is Istook’s hack safe? At a lower temperature, most likely. Is it actually a good way to make breakfast? That’s another question entirely.
