US close: S&P close to five-year high as global outlook improves

LONDON (ShareCast) - US stocks closed Thursday's session firmly in positive territory, pushing the S&P 500 close to its highest level in five years, as the outlook for the global economy improved.

This was supported by stronger than expected China exports data on Thursday morning.

Data showed China's December trade surplus recovered sharply to £19.5bn, way above expectations for a £12.3bn surplus. Exports rose 14.1% from a year earlier.

Of interest, technical analyst and Wall Street legend Ralph Acampora went on record as saying he believes investor sentiment toward US stocks is poised to change for the better and contribute to a multi-year advance, Bloomberg reported.

Company News

Ford (NYSE: F - news) doubled its quarterly dividend payment to 10 cents per share.

Jeweler Tiffany's share price plummeted after guiding towards the lower end of forecasts.

Supervalu (NYSE: SVU - news) was higher on news that it is to sell several retail assets to a group of investors led by private equity fund Cerberus Group for $3.3bn.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley (Xetra: 885836 - news) cut Microsoft (NasdaqGS: MSFT - news) to equalweight from overweight, contributing to the technology sector being the only sector in decline.

Warning from Esther George

Of interest, the President of the US Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas, Esther George, today went on record warning that a prolonged period of ultra-low rates might increase the risk of future asset bubbles.

In-line claims data

US wholesale inventories grew by 0.6% month-on-month (Consensus: 0.2%).

Initial US jobless claims were marginally higher than expected in the seven days running up to January 5th at 371,000, compared to the expected 365,000. However, continuing claims fell again, with week on week figures up to December 29th standing at 3,109,000 compared to 3,228,000 in the previous period.

Crude futures advance

Front month West Texas crude futures rose by 0.97% to the 94.00 dollar level on the NYMEX.

10-year US Treasury yields increased by four basis points, to the 1.90%.
