US close: Stocks end the day positively buoyed by economic data

The three main indices posted marginal gains on Friday rising by an average of 12 percentage points each with the Nasdaq Comp the biggest winner, advancing 21 percentage points over the course of the day. The stock market movements coincided with the publication of a raft of economic data from statistics bodies across the country as well as earnings reports from key players.

Conditions for New York manufacturers improved for the first time since the summer of 2012, according to the influential Empire State Manufacturing Survey 2013, which is seen by some as a barometer of manufacturing trends in the western part of the continent

Risers and fallers

Oil and gas company Apache Corp led energy stocks lower on Friday after the company provided a weak outlook following a fourth quarter earnings miss. Shares of Apache declined 4.3% as the company disclosed lower-than-expected production growth goals. It announced a flat $10.5bn capital expenditure budget that allocated about a fifth of its resources to projects that will contribute to production in 2014.

Meanwhile, shares of Monster Beverage Corp climbed 7.1% as speculation about a potential takeover resurfaced. Clothing retailer Gap Inc (NYSE: GPS - news) advanced on Friday after three days of losses to rise almost 5%.

Wal-Mart shares fell 2.1% to $69.30 at the close in New York, marking the biggest decline since December 12th. Internal emails were leaked to Bloomberg News revealing an underwhelming start to the month in terms of sales volumes. "In case you haven't seen a sales report these days, February MTD sales are a total disaster," Jerry Murray, Wal- Mart's vice president of finance and logistics, was cited by the news agency as saying in an email dated February 12th to other executives, referring to month-to-date sales. "The worst start to a month I have seen in my ~7 years with the company."

Meanwhile, quarterly results issued by JM Smucker, Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB - news) and VF Corp. came in in below forecasts. Marriott Intl. and Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL - news) also both announced share buy-back programmes.

Positive economic data

Meanwhile, the University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment gauge for the month of February delivered a reading of 88, above the consensus reading of 85.5.

US industrial production contracted 0.1% month-on-month in January, but beat expectations when revisions to prior data were taken into account.

Other markets Front month West Texas crude futures fell 1.24% to settle at $96.12 a barrel on NYMEX.

10-year US Treasury yields climbed by one basis point to the 2.01% level.
