US Market Indexes Gain With Positive Earnings and Outlook for Corporate Taxes

U.S. market indexes were higher on Tuesday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20996.12 for a gain of 232.23 points or 1.12%. The S&P 500 closed at 2388.61 for a gain of 14.46 points or 0.61%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at a new high of 6025.49 with a gain of 41.67 points or 0.70%. Stocks traded with low price volatility for the day with the VIX Volatility Index reporting a decrease of -0.08 points or -0.74% to 10.76.

Tuesday's market movers

Stocks gained with positive earnings and a positive outlook for President Donald Trump's corporate tax plans. Economic reports affecting trading for the day included the following:

• The FHFA House Price Index increased 0.8% for the month.

• The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index reported a seasonally adjusted monthly increase of 0.7% and a non-seasonally adjusted monthly increase of 0.4%.

• New home sales increased to 621,000 SAAR.

• The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index decreased to 120.3.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Caterpillar (CAT) 7.86%

McDonald's (MCD) 5.57%

DuPont (DD) 3.58%

Goldman Sachs (GS) 1.53%

JPMorgan (JPM) 0.87%

In the broad market, materials stocks led gains. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector up 0.52%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1411.08 for a gain of 13.13 points or 0.94%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 857.21 for a gain of 7.31 points or 0.86%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8428.81 for a gain of 74.96 points or 0.90%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9818.75 for a gain of 79.14 points or 0.81%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1747.84 for a gain of 10.49 points or 0.60%; the S&P 100 Index at 1055.40 for a gain of 6.87 points or 0.66%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1418.40 for a gain of 8.94 points or 0.63%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1325.20 for a gain of 8.02 points or 0.61%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 663.80 for a gain of 4.33 points or 0.66%.
