US Masters Residential Property Fund's (ASX:URF) Shareholders Are Down 90% On Their Shares

We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held US Masters Residential Property Fund (ASX:URF) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 90% in that time. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 71% in the last year. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 24% in the last 90 days.

Given that US Masters Residential Property Fund didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last half decade, US Masters Residential Property Fund saw its revenue increase by 12% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for US Masters Residential Property Fund the TSR over the last 5 years was -88%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
