Almost of great relevance, the renewed advance in energy quotes. So much so that the US Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, has stated on CNBC that the US is studying the option of releasing oil from the Strategic Reserve. As well, there is a fair amount of 'market chatter' regarding the possible negative implications of weaker than expected corporate results last quarter. Salesforce.com is gaining sharply after publishing results. JP Morgan has reiterated its overweight stance on shares of Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) . This before the World Mobile Congress on Monday. El Paso (NYSE: EP - news) is rising 4.6% on reports that Apollo Global Management is leading a group that is near buying the company's oil exploration unit for $7bn, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Interpublic Group (Dusseldorf: IPG.DU - news) is up 4.9% after announcing a $300m share buyback program. Aetna (NYSE: AET - news) will buy back $295m of its own shares. Comcast (NYSE: CCS - news) is suing a unit of Sprint alleging the infringement of four patents. From a sector stand-point the best performance is to be seen in the shares of companies belonging to the following industry groups: coal (1.68%), defence (1.45%) and hotels (1.42%). MACROECONOMY US consumer confidence rose to 75.3 points in February, according to the latest survey from the University of Michigan. New home sales rose more than expected in January, to an annualized rate of 321,000 (Consensus: 315,000). OTHER MARKETS Front month West Texas crude futures are now rising by 1.91% to the $109.89/barrel mark in NYMEX trading. 10 year US Treasuries for their part are gaining 4/32 dollars with yields at 1.98%.
