The main US equity benchmarks have nudged slightly higher following reports citing US House of Representatives speaker John Boehner as saying that he expects to keep working with President Obama on a resolution to the 'fiscal cliff.'

Also helping to buttress sentiment was the release of what at first glance appeared to have been generally better than forecast macroeconomic data and a flurry of M&A transactions grabbing the headlines.

As well, Republicans have delayed today´s vote on their Plan B, which led some to wonder if perhaps they had not been able to muster sufficient votes to pass their proposal.

Capitol Hill aside, the Intercontinental Exchange and NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX - news) confirmed their link-up in a transaction valued at $8.2bn. The latter´s stock has risen by 34%.

Roche may make an offer for rival Illumina (NasdaqGS: ILMN - news) according to press reports.

Conagra raised its earnings per share guidance for the year.

The latest quarterly results out of CarMax (NYSE: KMX - news) came in better than forecast.

Oracle (NasdaqGS: ORCL - news) bought Eloqua (NasdaqGM: ELOQ - news) for $23.5 a share.

Analysts at Bernstein decreased their price forecast on shares of Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) to 750 dollars from 800 dollars beforehand.

Better than expected economic figures

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia´s manufacturing gauge for the month of December has come in ahead of expectations, at 8.1, after a reading of -10.7 for the month before (Consensus: -3.0). That along with a large rise in the new orders sub-index.

Existing home sales data for the month of November (Xetra: A0Z24E - news) revealed that these rose to an annualised rate of 5.04m units (Consensus: 4.9m), after 4.76m in October.

US initial weekly unemployment claims rose by 17,000 to 361,000 (Consensus: 360,000) last week.

Third quarter US GDP data was revised up to show growth of 3.1 per cent, versus a previous estimate of 2.7 per cent (Consensus: 2.8 per cent).

Other asset classes now trading near unchanged
10 year US Treasury yields were flat, to the 1.79% mark.

Front month West Texas crude futures were up by 0.24% to the 90.24 dollar mark on the NYMEX.
