US midday: Tech stocks lead the advance

LONDON (ShareCast) - US markets spent the morning in positive territory, with the tech heavy NASDAQ (Nasdaq: ^NDX - news) leading the way.

Deutsche Bank (Xetra: 514000 - news) (DB) was doing its bit to boost tech stocks, issuing buy notes on online retailer Amazon and advertising giant Google (NasdaqGS: GOOG - news) .

According to DB, Amazon is the only large-cap company in the broker's research universe which has a manageable plan to grow revenues ten-fold over the next decade they say.



That sort of growth rate is enough to make even Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) sit up and take notice, if it can manage to do so under the rugby scrum of media luvvies rushing to give free advertising to the the launch of its new iPhone 5.

Deutsche Bank has got the Apple bug, raising its target for the company´s shares to $850 from $775 before.

Things are not looking so kushti for Research In Motion, the maker of the Blackberry smartphone. Blackberry users on the Vodafone (LSE: VOD.L - news) network in Europe (Chicago Options: ^REURUSD - news) , the Middle East and Africa suffered an outage today.

Wireless carrier MetroPCS Communications (NYSE: PCS - news) is wanted after the company's boss, Roger Linquist, told investors on Thursday that subscriber cancellations are tailing off.

Analysts at Citi have upgraded their view on shares of Mastercard (NYSE: MA - news) , the credit card firm, to "buy". Cantor Fitzgerald, meanwhile, has initiated coverage on online travel company Expedia (NasdaqGS: EXPE - news) with a "buy" recommendation.

Smiths Electric Vehicles has withdrawn its flotation in favour of private financing options.

Meanwhile over at the Fed

The President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta (BSE: ATLANTA.BO - news) , Dennis Lockhart, is scheduled to give a speech this evening.

Ahead of those words his peer over at the San Francisco Federal Reserve has been quoted as having said that when Operation Twist ends then they may go on to do outright Treasury purchases.

No US economic data is slated for release today.

Oil futures bounce back

Front month West Texas crude futures ended the morning in positive territory, up 71 cents at $93.13 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

10-year US Treasuries yields eased to 1.75% from 1.76% overnight.
