Bianca Andreescu pleads for outfit change at US Open: 'This dress is so bad'
Bianca Andreescu got off to a blistering start to kick off her US Open campaign, but it wasn’t completely smooth sailing for the Mississauga, Ont., native.
Unhappy with her initial outfit for her first-round match against France's Harmony Tan, Andreescu asked the chair umpire if she could change into new gear, while hoping the interlude wouldn’t count as an official bathroom break. Andreescu then placed the blame squarely on an uncomfortable design from her sponsor.
“Can this not count as one of my changeovers because, I mean, it’s not my fault, it’s Nike’s fault. This dress is so bad,” Andreescu appealed to the umpire.
Upon getting approval, Andreescu took off.
“OK, I need to go. This is really bad.”

This likely won’t rattle her sponsor too much as Andreescu has built a long-standing relationship with Nike, but you have to figure someone at Big Swoosh may have had their afternoon ruined.
In terms of the actual tennis, Andreescu claimed the first set with a dominant 6-0 showing. Tan rallied to take the second set 6-3 but Andreescu stormed back to win the decisive set 6-1. Andreescu will square off with Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round.

Andreescu rose to prominence at the 2019 US Open, defeating Serena Williams to capture her first major, and rose to No. 4 in the world rankings later that fall while winning the Lou Marsh Trophy, awarded to Canada’s best athlete. The 22-year-old is looking to return to form again after taking a mental health hiatus to begin the 2022 season. She recently advanced to the third round of the National Bank Open before being upset by China’s Zheng Qinwen in a three-set loss.
Monday's outfit snafu appeared to be a minor distraction, but ultimately Andreescu could go on a massive run in New York, which would be to Nike’s benefit.
