US Sugar finishes season with 5.5M tons of harvest; wet weather reduced yield from last year
CLEWISTON, Fla. (AP) -- One of the nation's biggest sugar producers has wrapped up the season's harvest.
U.S. Sugar says its 198-day season yielded 5.5 million tons of sugarcane.
That's down from 5.8 million tons last year, in part because of wet weather that flooded some fields and affected crops.
A company spokeswoman says heavy rain early in the harvest forced the shutdown of its mills for several days and cost tens of millions of dollars.
