Update: Vakrangee (NSE:VAKRANGEE) Stock Gained 69% In The Last Year

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. To wit, the Vakrangee Limited (NSE:VAKRANGEE) share price is 69% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 6.0% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 69% lower than it was three years ago.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the last twelve months, Vakrangee actually shrank its EPS by 96%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We doubt the modest 0.6% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. Unfortunately Vakrangee's fell 90% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Vakrangee has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 71% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 8.2% per year over five years. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought.
